Caterpillars
Cassie has been collecting caterpillars, she has 15 and she named them all. She feeds them and checks on them daily. We looked them up and found out they are Eastern Tent Caterpillars

If you have an aquarium, you can set them up in there with some twigs/branches and they will cocoon themselves and you can watch them come out as moths. Then you can release them and watch them fly away.

Too funny. My daughter collects those every season. They eat Oak tree leaves...if you didn't know.
My daughter is a 'new teen' but still finds it entertaining to collect, identify, and hatch various caterpillars every season. Homeschooling/unschooling at it's best!

I had a caterpillar once. It died so my friend and I buried it by our pond.
My last year in public school my teacher got us caterpillars and we got to watch them grow and turn in to butterflies and then we released them. It was pretty neat. One of the few things I remember from public school lol.
At first glance, I thought I was looking at an infested salad!
Collecting them seems a much better route than our ordering them (though that was fun too!). Perhaps we'll try that this summer. After we get used to leopard gecko we're supposed to inherit...
