Our oldest son worked at Wendy's for the past 15 months, he just left this weekend. They hated to see him go, they loved him, he showed up on time and did his job. They offered him a management position, but he knew the salary just wasn't worth the hours and the stress.
He has been planning on starting his own business for quite sometime now. Learning, researching, saving his money and buying equipment and products. He has finally launched it, he has only done a few jobs so far and customers are very pleased with his work.
We are just so proud of him for finding something he loves to do and to be able to make money and be his own boss. We raised them to follow their interests and passion and to be anything they want to be.
I believe that he will be successful in this because it is what he wants and he is willing to work for it.

Preparing for what?
Why is there so much emphasis on taking specific classes in high school and passing certain tests? I'm talking about public school and traditional homeschooler's that do the same thing as schools.What is done in high school doesn't have much bearing on college or one's future. Who cares what classes you took as a teenager? If/when you go to college you take their entrance exam and then you take their classes.
I don't see the correlation of high school preparing one for college or better yet, real life. I think time would be much better spent following one's interests and learning about what is really important to them. Time should be spent thinking and exploring. Time spent alone or with others. Time spent working and earning their own money. Time spent to really figure out what they want to do with their life.
Nothing magic happens at 18 that suddenly makes you know what you want to do. What does happen at 18 is that society deems you an adult, period.
Some know what they want to do with their life from an early age and they pursue it. Many kids don't know, they are forced to pick a major and follow a career path. I did it, I had focused goals, but guess what? People change, plans change, life happens as you live it. What I had planned on way back when I was 18, never happened, my life took a complete turn in another direction.
So have some goals, make some loose plans because nothing is written in stone.
Why spend years taking classes when you won't remember most of it anyway? I do believe it's all just busywork to keep kids occupied until they are adults and the school system doesn't have to worry about them anymore.
They need to be doing real things in real life, not busywork in an artificial environment that will never be replicated in life.

Goals
Do you ever look at things in the past and remember goals or plans and think how different things turned out?
Let's go back 20 years, ouch that hurts, okay I'm 36 now I can handle it, I think...
I was very career oriented, I had career goals, I was going to manage and then own a Hotel. I love hotels, big beautiful glorious ones of course, I used to watch the TV show Hotel, I know it was cheesy but I loved it. I have been to some beautiful ones just as a tourist and I have stayed in a few really nice ones. I went to college for Hotel Management, didn't graduate, I decided that having a baby was more important :)
My goals never involved kids, I was going for the career, I had to be in charge, I had to be the boss, working for someone else was never my goal.
Well, here I am the mother of 4 wonderfully made children, I don't own a hotel but we own a house and I manage it :)
I'm not the boss though, well maybe just a little, I am the facilitator of this establishment and all who live in it. I am the go to girl, the answerer, the researcher, the finder, the mom come here, the game player, drawer, colorer, cooker, cleaner, player, reader, how do you spell this, what does this say, mom can you...mom watch this...and so much more.
How different things can turn out from how we thought they would.
We are fostering an independence in our kids, my hope for them is to be who they are and not take heat from some authority figure. I hope they will be independent thinkers of their own free will, non -conformists, entreprenuers. Whatever they decide I just want them to be happy with themselves and the choices they make.
