School started here today, our kids friends had to go back. I am just so thankful that our kids have never had to deal with back to school angst. They were home sleeping comfortably in their beds as they should be.
Childhood is too short to spend it in a classroom for 12 years. Kids grow up so fast, time flies and I wanted to spend as much time with our kids as possible.
Our oldest is 19 now and the rest are 16,14 and 12. They are not little kids anymore. They are growing up right before my eyes.
It seems like yesterday they were all babies, I just can't imagine not spending every day with them during the years that are so important for growth and development.
Today for Show and Tell, I've brought a tiny marvel of nature: a single snowflake. I think we might all learn a lesson from how this utterly unique and exquisite crystal turns into an ordinary, boring molecule of water, just like every other one, when you bring it in the classroom. And now, while the analogy sinks in, I'll be leaving you drips and going outside." ~ Calvin, from Calvin & Hobbes

Sleep freedom
I've written about sleep and arbitrary bedtimes before.
This is just a little more insight into watching my children truly sleep when they are tired.
When they go to bed varies usually between 1am and 5am.
Lately Cassie has been all turned around. She was staying up all night and sleeping all day for a week or two. Now this past week, she has been sleeping around 5-6pm until 3-5am. So she has been up in the day and asleep at night. Actually last week it was something like sleep 2-6am, get up and then go back to sleep around noon, just really odd...
Tonight she went to bed at 5 and is sleeping now. She'll wake up sometime early in the morning.
She is on a growth spurt. The last time she switched her sleep around, she ate, slept and grew. I wrote about it in the post Late Night Life, no linky at the moment....
She is 11 and is preparing for womanhood, she has grown a couple inches already. They literally grow in their sleep.
I am just so glad that she can do this. When I was a kid I suffered migraines and exhaustion among other things because I had to get up and go to school even though I just fell asleep.
She is truly listening to her body and sleeping when she needs to no matter what the clock says.
Freedom is beautiful!
I still don't sleep right. I'll leave you with Holt:
"I can't help noting that no cultures in the world that I have ever heard of make such a fuss about children's bedtimes, and no cultures have so many adults who find it so hard either to go to sleep or wake up. Could these social facts be connected? I strongly suspect they are."

a little more about TV
It seems there are a few *biggies* in unschooling/parenting forums.
Math, tv, video games, food, sleep, these seem to strike fear in people.
How will they ever _____ if I don't make them _____??????
Unschooling is a philosophy that people are born with an innate desire to learn and that learning is as natural as breathing.
We trust the learning process and it is different in every person because everyone is unique.
Nobody learns the same thing at the same age, it just doesn't make sense. Yes there are averages because otherwise it's all across the board.
Straight from birth, each milestone is reached at a different age, it's reached in that child's timeframe. I'm not even sure I agree with *milestones* as it makes it out that EVERY baby will do _____.
Anyway back to TV.
My kids have never had artificial limits or rules imposed on them.
They are free to watch TV or not watch TV.
Cassie likes TV and she does have it on often, she has her favorite shows and knows when they are on.
Her TV is on a lot, it will be on while she is playing, she usually forgets it's on and leaves her room.
Once in awhile she shuts it off.
Last night was one of those times.
We cleaned her room and she loves it when it is clean.
She turned her radio on and was sitting on her bed writing in her notebook.
Be Free!!!!

true choice
Let me backtrack a second...
Cassie has started watching the Brady Bunch and Little House on the Prairie. I get LH on Netflix for her.
TV Land plays them both on weekends starting at 2 am. Yesterday she was ecstatic that it was Saturday so she could watch Brady Bunch.
It wasn't on last night, she cried. I looked online, they don't play full episodes of it, I checked Netflix, no instant play.
I checked the listings and it is on tonight. She was still upset last night but I found a movie for her on instant play that she likes and that helped a little bit.
She is going to stay up and watch all of it tonight, 2 episodes of each that will bring her to 5 am before she goes to bed.
I asked her if she was sure about watching it all and she said yes she is planning on it.
I guess I'm just saying that it is her choice to stay up and watch and fall asleep afterwards.
That is real freedom of choice.

The other side of the clock
I have always been a night owl, it was torture to get up and go to school for all of those years.
No matter what, I was up late and got very little sleep.
In highschool I used two alarm clocks, one by my bed and one on the other side of my room, so I had to get up to shut it off.
That was actually my boss' idea, I worked as a hotel maid and had to be there by 8am on weekends.
It didn't work though, I would just get up and go back and forth for at least 30 minutes most days.
When I did work, I worked the swing shift, I was in college and had morning classes, go figure.
My children have inherited my night owl tendencies.
You could say some is because of environment but if that were true I would have adapted to the dayshift.
Lately though we have gotten even later.
We have started a 2am ritual of watching House of Payne. We absolutely love it, it is hilarious, the kids get all excited when I stay up and watch it with them.
It seems that they have headed into going to bed at 4am, sometimes later.
I don't get as much sleep as the kids but I guess they need more.
I love the freedom we have to sleep when we want, it's important to find your natural rhythm.
I think it's detrimental to try and force sleep, just like it's detrimental to force anything on another person.

No Schedules
There really is simple beauty in not having to adhere to strict schedules.
We are so blessed to be able to run our day as it comes. Sure we have a routine, I think that most people do.
After the kids were sick last week I just realized how great it is that we didn't HAVE to go to school or anywhere. We could just do what we needed to do to take care of the situation.
We do what we want most days, when we do have an appointment or are meeting up at a certain time it does cause some stress.
I love how our days ebb and flow and I love the fact that we are free and have the choice in how to spend our day.
Last week is a blur.
Just tonight Jason was asking me about something that was supposed to be taken care of a week ago but he thought it was today.
I said no that was the 8th, he said what is today then, I said the 15th, he was just wondering how he missed a week. I reminded him that the kids were sick and it was a wash.
He does have an 8-5 job with slight flexibility. I mean he could go in late or leave early when needed. We really want to start our own business so he can be here and have more freedom but right now we are just so thankful that he has a job.
To bring this around to unschooling and living and learning and following our interests, you just can't schedule real learning. Learning happens, life happens it's what we do with it that matters.
I am thrilled to report that the sickness is past and the sounds in my house are back to normal.
Lots of playing going on, imagination abounds. A little arguing too :)
My kids follow their interests and do so many things throughout the day. Not one bit looks like school and all of it is learning.
I little while ago I walked in my room to see price tags on all of our stuff, I guess they were having a sale...
I can't possibly list everything they do and you probably aren't interested.

Latest learning tools
We played a lot of Hangman this week.
Jared and Cassie are always drawing pictures.
Lots of world of Warcraft, a little Club Penguin, Nick Jr. and Sesame Street.
Exploring weather, catching fireflies, swimming, baseball, riding bikes, friends sleeping over, baking cookies, basketball, some movie watching, cooking, listening to music, dress up, cars, race tracks, lincoln logs, tinker toys, barbie dolls, toy guns, taking care of plants and animals, lots of questions, G.I. Joe, army, grocery shopping, cards...
That's all I can think of at the moment.
Kids are always busy playing, learning, growing and exploring and free to follow their interests.

What has she been thinking about?
In case anyone wonders why I've been quiet it's because my mind is thinking and contemplating and I'm having a hard time writing it down.
Some of these thoughts are old ones resurfaced, some are new, some are raw, but I have to feel what I feel in order to figure stuff out.
A few things on my mind lately are homeschooling, unschooling, secular, Christian, what's the difference, spanking(NOT) but why do people do that, what would Jesus really do, my faith, my beliefs, my principles, this country, politics and of course the damaging effects of public school.
I'm not sure what I'll touch on in this post I guess I'll go where my mind takes me. I'll probably go take a bath and come back and finish this.
A few days ago I was really thinking about unschooling as secular or Christian because many people will use that distinction, so I was thinking about what the REAL difference is. In my mind I believe that Christians base their life on faith, well so do I, but I am not a Christian unschooler and I don't homeschool for religious reasons. I just happen to be a Christian and an unschooler it's how I live, it's not even a defined thing except online. Some people call it *secular unschooling* and *Christian unschooling* I just don't do that, unschooling is unschooling, many different people with many different beliefs unschool.
There are many more faiths and religions out there that unschool so secular or Christian doesn't begin to define it.
I'm not trying to define anything I really don't like many labels, some serve a purpose especially when we are looking for people who think like we do or at least have an idea of where we are coming from. The only problem with that is stereotypes, I hate stereotypes but when you meet people who make them true it can be frustrating. It can make you not want to associate yourself with a certain label or group because of what others believe about them whether it's true or not.
I run a yahoo group of unschooling Christians, so I know they are out there.
When I talk to people who aren't Christian and hear some experiences they have had with Christians it makes me want to scream. Spanking and control are big issues, I do not believe in spanking. As a matter of fact I firmly believe that hitting is wrong and unacceptable and nobody has the right to hit someone else.
Children are smacked everyday and some are guised under Christian parental authority, that makes me ill, it makes me not want to be lumped in with those people. I may be losing some readers here but it's how I feel it's how I have always felt.
If an adult hits an adult they can press charges but if a child is hit they have to take it...
I wasn't spanked as a child but I was beat up as a teen and mentally , emotionally and verbally abused.
I am a believer in God and Jesus, I love the Lord I pray daily I have faith and I will just live on that faith. I will not live by religious indoctrination and I will not take any man's interpretation of the Bible as gospel. God knows my heart and he loves me because he created me. I am free to be ME, Christ has set me free.
My kids are free, we live and learn without rules and punishment but with respect and faith.

But if I don't make them...
The mainstream response to many issues between parent and child. This is a little story about my always unschooled, never bedtimed little girl. This is not the first time this is happened and it won't be the last and 3 out of my 4 kids have done this, Jared hasn't only because he is 5 and is still attached to me.
We have all heard parents say "If I don't make them_____, how will they learn?"
Left intentionally blank because there are so many phrases I have heard and read online.
This is inspired by my little girl who usually is up until 3-4am and sleeps until 3pm. She is a night owl like me, if only I got to sleep that long...
Friday night she made plans to go to her friend's house on Saturday, we decided on 2pm. She has a hard time going to bed until she is good and ready otherwise she can't sleep, gee that's vaguely familiar. She knew she had to get up before her usual time, the issue with that is that she anticipates it and can't sleep. I am the same way, if I know I have to get up before my usual time, I can't sleep, it's really frustrating and causes exhaustion for me. She is 8 though so she bounces back much faster than I can.
So last night she went to bed around 3:30 am, I read her a story every night and tuck her in. I got online and was reading all your blogs :)
She came out at 4:30am, just when I was getting ready to go to bed and told me she couldn't sleep. It was obvious to me that she was asleep and woke up so I just told her she should just go back to bed.
Apparantly she woke up at 10am, she got herself dressed, she packed a bag of things she was taking, she fed herself and brushed her teeth. She did wake me up a few times but hey with the dogs barking since 8 am I wasn't really sleeping.
What's sleep? I forgot what it's like...
My point is that this child got herself up and ready to go without being told to do it. WHY? Well all her life whenever we go somewhere we get dressed, eat and brush our teeth, so she knows what to do before leaving the house. Simple? Yes! Model, live, this is real life ya know.
Now I was made to get up and go to school and I am 36 years old and I finally go to bed when I want. Don't call me before 1pm, don't make plans with me before at least 2pm, I haven't found anything important enough to get me up.
See the difference? When you force a child to go to bed, get up, go to school so that they learn how to go to work as an adult is really asinine. Force and coerision are counterproductive to real life, just set them up to be miserable and resent life, yep that works...

Rules, punishment, Christianity, unschooling...
Obviously I don't know what to call this post, I have thoughts spurred from a recent exchange on a yahoo group. I admit to skimming and not fully reading but I pretty much do that anyway, it's how I read.
There are no rules and punishments in my house, there is not top down authoritarian parenting. We advocate respect and safety, we talk, we model, we live, one person's freedom ends where another begins, we must have respect in the house. This is something that takes time and effort from parents to model for their kids, you can't expect what you don't give. You also need to realize that it is a process just like everything else, modeling and discussing are high on the list.
I am a Christian because I believe in God, I believe that Jesus is his son who walked on this earth as a perfect man. I do not believe in churchianity, I do not believe in obedience out of fear, I do not believe in arbitrary rules and thou shalt nots and punishment. I choose to believe, I choose to have faith, I choose to be responsible because it's the right thing to do. I do not do it out of fear of eternal damnation.
I want my kids to act out of the sheer fact that it's kind and right and respectful not because they are afraid of what I will do to them if they don't, or worse what God will do.
Parenting based on fear and punishment is flawed at best and it sets up an adversarial relationship with our kids.
There is no *getting in trouble* if anyone does something *wrong* we talk about it, we work out the problem. We talk about so many things all of the time, we do not parent out of fear and we do not instill fear in our kids. I do not train my children either they are not animals they are people, I guide, model, respect, discuss, and facilitate and pray a lot. Heck even our dogs are unschooled... They are free in the boundaries of our property, they aren't beaten or punished, they are animals, how could I treat my child less...
Society is full of laws and rules, why do we need them in our homes? We sure don't, we should be free in our own homes. Naysayers might say how could someone raised without rules obey the laws of the land?
Well it is called modeling and discussing and learning about our world. My kids know about laws and rules they just don't have extra ones at home. For what it's worth sometimes laws are stupid and I do break them, am I some bad influence? NO! I am a person with a brain that does not mindlessly follow anyone. If I drive fast and get caught I pay the consequence, it's really that simple. Although ya'll know I am against speed limits and drinking ages and homeschool laws and anything that takes away civil liberty and personal freedom and responsibility for one's actions.
As unschoolers who live and learn in freedom without the confines of school we parent the same way, we live and breathe freedom. We advocate responsibility and respect for each other and for this world that God gave us.
There are no rules and punishments in my house, there is not top down authoritarian parenting.

What can I say?
Well I can say a lot and I can say it in such a swirl that you will go what the hell did she just say?
I have so many thoughts, I am not an ADD I am just a person with a whole lot going on and it's hard to narrow things down to one thought or one post. I'm not sure where this is going but if you follow then you are at least a hyper-threader like me. They used to call it multi-tasking before the computer age took over :)
First of all my husband came home from work with the flu, I am not thrilled, I am coughing but you all know me I refuse to get sick. I just wish my will was as strong as I think it is :)
I am very concerned about my family at this moment...
I am very concerned about this country at the moment. I was going to post about Liberalism, it's true form is what I am a classic liberal not a social liberal, I will elaborate later.
I want freedom, I do not want the government in my kool-aid and telling me the flavor. I do not want big brother dictating my kid's education, I do not want any intervention in my private life.
I do not understand people who want the government to tell them what to do and how to live. I do not want my taxes raised it's bad enough that we have no say where our money goes. They just take it!!!
This country was founded on FREEDOM and DAMNIT I do NOT want my freedom taken away. If you want a socialist government then would you just please MOVE, there are plenty of socialist countries to choose from. We have too many people in congress who are socialists I can not handle a socialist president.
I am so sick of intervention, I am so sick of people waiting for handouts!!! UGH!!!
I need freedom, my kids deserve freedom, as unschoolers we live and learn and breathe freedom.
We learn so much everyday, you can not stop the learning, you need to embrace it. Let your kids live, let them be who they are, you need to live and learn and be true to who you are also. We need to be the example, we need to learn, we need to follow our interests.
So many have been dumbed down, I see it, I hear about it, my husband lives it with his co-workers. They are TOO stupid to think for themselves, they prove it daily with their actions and comments. What a sad state our public school system has left people in, how sad that they know they are dumb and don't want to change it.
I am sorry for those who are not in the U.S. but I can't hide my political feelings.
School is school and dumbed down is dumbed down and the government has no right to regulate our private lives period.

I am WHO I AM
I am done trying to change myself. Today I was telling Jason that I'm done trying to be something I'm not. I don't know what my problem is, I have that slight perfectionist streak in me...ok it's more than slight. I am so gung ho on doing everything right, I don't want to screw up my kids or disappoint anyone. Somehow I have come to have these ideal images and expectations of myself that are really unattainable. I have no idea how I got to this point, well I have some idea when I look over my life.
Why don't I think I am good enough? Jason said he thinks I'm good enough and he has a pretty good judge of character so what does that say about his judgment? I told him he is right and I have to accept who I am and enjoy being me. Over the years I have gone through many stages of growth and development and I see that my true self has never changed. I am me, I am the person God created, I am wonderfully made, I'm done denying it, I am worthy.
So I am not hiding myself under some false pretenses or political correctness, or anything. It seems that those 10 years in the Church of Christ I really tried to change myself. I questioned many preachers, I made statements, I tried to be heard but amid all of those jumpers and uncut hair we can lose ourself. So no more of that, I am not afraid to be me, at least I don't think I am...
I can be wild, I can be freaky, I can be FUN!!!! It's time to let go of the crap that is holding me down and be true to myself. I am FREE!
Thanks for being my therapeutic sounding board :)
Enough about me...

Giving advice
I find that I have a hard time giving advice to new to unschooling people who are on the fence. What I mean is some posts are full of red flag statements and misconceptions of unschooling and if I let them statements. I really want to help people see the light, let go, trust the process and unschool completely.
I love talking about unschooling and helping people who are truly seeking it. I have great difficulty replying to those that are so far from the concept.
In order to get unschooling you have to want to get it, you have to detox from the system you have to look at learning from a completely new perspective. You really need to have good reasons to home educate in the first place. Unschooling isn't something you do on a whim or try for a day, week or month. It takes time to see the fruit, it takes time to see the process in our children, to see real learning unfold doesn't happen overnight. Everything is connected and sometimes those connections can take months to be made.
If you seriously want to unschool ask yourself *WHY*
What are your real reasons?
First of all for me I am vehemently against compulsary schooling and the basis of the whole system. Why would I try to re-create that in my home?
I know there are lots of happy homeschoolers that push curriculum and make limits on electronics and everything else, well I don't know how happy the kids are :)
I personally know people like this, no I'm not friends with them. That is really because we have nothing in common but homeschooling and parenting issues are BIG on my list.
I have a dear friend who is an eclectic homeschooler, we have talked in length about many things. She doesn't force school but she will never be an unschooler, she said it herself, she can't let go completely. I respect her for making that admission, in the mean time I still can plant seeds.
When people come to unschooling lists and post about their hang ups, I need to know if they really want to unschool before I proceed. Why is that? I am very passionate and very straight and I can't be worrying about saying the wrong thing, LOL! So if you really want my advice, I freely give it but you need to decide why you want to unschool and then get over yourself so your kids have the chance to learn in freedom.

Unconventional Christian
So many of my thoughts and beliefs are unconventional, I've been thinking a lot about being a Christian and how much I have changed and grown and gone back to my original roots.
I have met a brand new blogger and she is new to unschooling and I am using her term so I think I'll introduce her here and maybe if more people visit her blog it will encourage her, Hilaree
Unconventional-
–adjective
not conventional; not bound by or conforming to convention, rule, or precedent; free from conventionality: an unconventional artist; an unconventional use of material.
I wish I had a tape recorder :) I have just had so many thoughts and had a long talk with Jason, I just may try to write a book someday...
I believe that faith is personal between me and God, not some rule oriented lifestyle that man has mandated to be God's word. I do not believe in institutionalized religion anymore than institutionalized schooling. Our faith is not something to be judged or ridiculed or ruled, it is to be lived.
I believe that I was a Christian since I was 12, my mom prayed with me and I accepted Christ. I had a very rough childhood and I did things that weren't very good but I always prayed and I believe that God was with me and watching over me.
I never thought that you had to go to church to be a Christian, I believed that God was everywhere and we could pray and worship at any time not just at 10 am on Sunday.
I went to many different churches and didn't really believe any of their doctrines. We didn't go for many years but I always had faith and prayed and believed I was a Christian.
Then we joined the Church of Christ and got baptized and lots of things changed. Things I believed to be true I was told were not, we studied the Bible weekly and learned a lot. I also became *holier than thou* and started telling others what I had learned and challenged their convictions. I judged people by so many measures I can't count, I didn't realize I was doing that at the time though. As time went on and I changed and had all my kids and I really started reflecting on these *truths* I realized that I didn't really believe in all of these should's and should not's.
After careful prayer and lots of time to make sure it was right we left the church. I have been growing with God and keeping my faith but I do not need an institution and I do not need any man made religion all I need is the Lord.

Thoughts from the dizzy blonde
Well I'm not blonde now am I Tina? LOL! But I used to be I'll get a picture of me blonde soon.
Dh and I joke about blondes and dizzy and stuff all the time so since I have an inner ear/sinus thing going on I am really dizzy even if I'm a brunette.
I am better than yesterday, my gosh, I was taking a shower and shaving my legs and then I instantly was weak in the arms and legs and I sat down. I started crying, Cassie came in and I was sitting there with soap in my hair and one shaved leg... It was not cool, talk about freakin out, I was shaking so bad...
I have been having dizziness on and off and an ear twinge on and off but I guess it got worse. I am prone to this but it has been awhile, maybe since last winter.
Today I was taking my Xlear nasal spray that dh drove to get after work last night. It is not convenient to buy non medicated treatments, the health food stores are nowhere near us, he didn't get home until almost 7 pm, he is such a good guy :)
I'm off my rocker, today I needed to lay down, pure exhaustion, this is not me, so I know I have a virus. The neighbor kids came over as soon as they got off the bus and guess what their mom is sick, oh joy I don't feel good and I get 6 loud kids instead of 4. Something ain't right here!
I was not myself I told the kids I didn't feel well, my head hurts and I need to lay down...
They were just being loud and goofing and I had to tell them to go outside. I had a little talk about respect with them today.
I realize that there is a huge sense of freedom at my house but you need to respect me :)
I just took a hot bath and had so many thoughts but something about them going down the drain really stinks. I put the hot washcloth on my face and had some wine and just tried to relax.
I also will use my eye pillow when I go to bed, I got it from my friend Penny, I keep it in the freezer.
Here's hoping and praying I'll be better tomorrow!

What is the meaning of life?
LOL! Beats me, let me in on it if you know!!
Ok so I haven't been online much lately, 2 computers 6 people, do the math!
I have tried to go to bed early well for 2 days anyway. One night by 1:45am still awake until 4:00, the next night by 12:30 awake until 2:30am. So my theory remains the same, going to bed earlier does not insure more sleep or even rest for that matter.
My kids also went to bed earlier but Cassie came in at least 3 times to tell me she couldn't sleep. Jared who sleeps in our bed did not want to stay up without me so he came to bed and babbled for like an hour. He asked me all sorts of questions and I told him that I was really tired and couldn't talk, LOL! So he finally falls asleep and there I am still awake, sheesh.
Everytime I try to go to bed earlier it backfires, but I figure I'll give it a shot :)
The truth is we were more tired and definitely had some cranky issues. So I say go to bed when you want and wake up when you want! I have always said that but sometimes I do these little experiments to keep me on my toes.
So much to say where to begin? Well you all know that we love unschooling, we love the freedoms we have. Case in point, our new friends who are unschoolers and free in other areas also... Our kids will talk on the phone while playing computer games until well into the night. Usually our phone battery dies then they have to say good-bye. The freedom to do that is really wonderful.
Last weekend our neighbor's went out of town and the grandma stayed with the kids. The boy called up Brenny and they were playing Runescape and talking on the phone and he said his grandma didn't care if he was up and that he wanted to stay up all night. This is no big deal to Brennan who goes to bed when he wants but it was huge to W, he told Brenny that it was *my day* so funny he is 8 years old and partying while mom and dad are away... They stayed up until 6:30am.
Such a small thing to us but a huge thing to him to stay up all night like it's something magical.
Actually Brennan just told me that W said that he is going to homeschool his kids that he doesn't ever want them to go to school, he is 8!!!
I know that we are having a profound affect on these kids lives and are showing them a glimpse of how things can be. They practically live here, just tonight another example of someone else's rules... They spent all day here from like 12:30 to 5:30, then they went somewhere and W came back around 6:30 and said that he could play in our yard, front or back but not in the house. Brennan told me he didn't feel like playing outside right now, of course I told him he didn't have to but he needs to tell W.
Shouldn't it be up to me whether or not they are in MY house??? Oh well so W went home, and tomorrow is back to school, they have had a 2 week break.
More and more my kids realize how different things can be from one house to the next, I always knew. The thing is if the opportunity doesn't present itself I really have no business saying anything. That is what is so hard even with our own friends we really have to be careful what we say but we can definitely be examples.

Goals
Do you ever look at things in the past and remember goals or plans and think how different things turned out?
Let's go back 20 years, ouch that hurts, okay I'm 36 now I can handle it, I think...
I was very career oriented, I had career goals, I was going to manage and then own a Hotel. I love hotels, big beautiful glorious ones of course, I used to watch the TV show Hotel, I know it was cheesy but I loved it. I have been to some beautiful ones just as a tourist and I have stayed in a few really nice ones. I went to college for Hotel Management, didn't graduate, I decided that having a baby was more important :)
My goals never involved kids, I was going for the career, I had to be in charge, I had to be the boss, working for someone else was never my goal.
Well, here I am the mother of 4 wonderfully made children, I don't own a hotel but we own a house and I manage it :)
I'm not the boss though, well maybe just a little, I am the facilitator of this establishment and all who live in it. I am the go to girl, the answerer, the researcher, the finder, the mom come here, the game player, drawer, colorer, cooker, cleaner, player, reader, how do you spell this, what does this say, mom can you...mom watch this...and so much more.
How different things can turn out from how we thought they would.
We are fostering an independence in our kids, my hope for them is to be who they are and not take heat from some authority figure. I hope they will be independent thinkers of their own free will, non -conformists, entreprenuers. Whatever they decide I just want them to be happy with themselves and the choices they make.

Unschooling friends
We have been blessed with real live unschooling friends. We are getting to know each other, spending hours at each others houses, hours that go by like minutes. The kids are having so much fun playing together.
Even after we go home the kids are talking on the phone for hours, playing computer games together.
It is just so cool to sit down and talk to someone about all sorts of topics and get to know each other. The really neat thing is that the way we parent is in the same line of thinking as well.
I really believe that in order to unschool successfully we do parent differently, more in tune with each child, more respectfully and mindfully than mainstream top down rule oriented thinking.
I'm trying to be vague with descriptions and names but I am just so thrilled to actually know people who get us and don't think we are from another planet :)
Tonight Cassie was on the computer and on the phone with her friend pretty late, I was in the tub but it was between 1-1:30 am. How cool is that? The really cool thing was that the mom was playing on the computer too with the kids. She is cool!
My point is we are having a blast with our new friends and we are loving the freedoms that unschooling entails.
